The Phare
Cultural Development Programme began its operation in September 1998.
In the Operation Plan agreed between the Ministry of Culture and the
European Commission it comprised 1.050.000 Euro for various activities divided
into several competitions. Thus, in
order to receive a grant in the area of culture and art meant participation of
projects of the cultural institutions and individuals in competitions.
1.
The Open Competition Fund was conducted in order to finance small
projects in the amount between 2.000
and 20.000 Euro to the cultural institutions and individual applicants that work
in the fields of culture and arts. The competition had two rounds, to which
about 500 applicants sent their projects, and 31 of them were selected. For that
purpose, a Selection Committee was formed, upon nominations by the Minister of
Culture. All projects are in their final phase, and a total of 360.000 Euro were

The Closed Competition Fund is intended for precisely determined
institutions that submitted to the CDP their priorities designed as projects.
·
Macedonian National Theatre - lighting equipment in the amount of 90.000
Euro for the two buildings of the theatre.
·
Cinematheque of Macedonia - machine for anti-bacterial cleaning of the
archive of films -35.000 Euro
·
Museum of Macedonia has used the funds granted in the total amount of
90.000 Euro for financing of two sub-projects:
-Kuršumli
An - adaptation of the ground floor and the railing at the entrance
-Icon Gallery within the Museum, providing special conditions for exhibition of the icon collection of the Museum

A Fund for conservation and protection was also indented for cultural
institutions that work within the domain of conservation and preservation of the
monuments of culture.

Antique theatre in Ohrid - a grant in the amount of 120.000 Euro for
reconstruction of the theatrone of the theatre.
·
Mosaics in Heraclea Lyncaestis, Bitola - a grant in the amount of 20.000
Euro for discovering and protection, as well as better presentation of a part of
the mosaics.
·
Archaeological site Stobi - Veles - a grant in the amount of 120.000
Euro for:
-Railing
of the locality
-Removal
of the piles of earth, preparation of promotional materials and posting of billboards,
kiosks, small tables at each of the objects
-A
security system
·
Laboratory equipment for the Republic Bureau for Protection of Cultural
Monuments, in the amount of 150.000 Euro

Within the training component, 3 seminars (for cultural management,
financing in the culture, marketing and cultural tourism and management of
archaeological localities.
5.
A study trip to Austria, Germany and Hungary was performed for the
recipients of the biggest grants.
The
allocation of the approved funds is performed according to the criteria and the
principles of the European Commission, and the awarding of grants was agreed as
partnership with an active participation by the Ministry of Culture, which means
that both projects are co-financed by both partners.
