ST. NIKOLA, village of BURILOVCI

To the east of the city of Sveti Nikole, on the left bank of river Dolna Reka, next to the old graveyard in the village of Burilovci, there is a small medieval church, built at an older cultic location and dedicated to the saint St. Nikola.

St. Nikola, Fresco-painting from The church  St. Nikola, village of Borilovci, 15th/16th century

It is a single nave construction, made of dressed and broken stone with mortar. It has a rectangle shaped base, and it is covered by a round arch. The entrance is located on its west side and it is a small, single door that leads to the interior of the church that contains fresco paintings originating from two different time periods – the first one, the period when the church was actually built (presumably during the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century), and the second period of the 19th century.

The name of the church fresco-artist is unknown, but, judging by the quality of the frescos, drawings and coloring, researchers and scientists unanimously agree that it was a man of great artistic and creative capabilities. The following compositions can be singled-out: "Dormition of Virgin Mary", "Sretenje", "Birth of Jesus Christ" etc.
