The church St. Nicola – the Miracle-worker – Chelnik
The medieval church St. Nicola the Miracle-worker is located about a hundred meters from the Frontal (Chelnichka) Gate that leads to the old part of the town – Varosh.
There is no information about its origins, nevertheless, it is mentioned in a document of Kozma Kitjanski dating from the 1694, as a chapel of the Chelnik mahalla.
In the beginning of this century it was burnt and after the renewal a flat roof was built, thus the fresco-paintings from the 14th century were covered with ceiling.
After the fire the fresco-paintings lost their coloring.
The frontal (biforen) window, in the apse, is the old Byzantine capital with an engraved cross, and beside the window are two ancient capitals.
Archeological researches are being made this year and a process of discovering the accompanying objects around the church.
