At the foothills of the Skopska Crna Gora mountain, near the village of Banjani and the valley of Banjska river, there is a monastery with a church dedicated to St. Elijah. This monastery is known among the people as the monastery St. Ilija Gorni. |
The monastery complex is composed by the church St. Ilija, the monastery lodgings, renovated and adapted for monastery tourism, the nicely kept garden with deep shade from the trees and cold water that refreshes each visitor.
It is interesting to note that this wonderful place was one of the locations where scenes from the movie "Before the rain" (an Oscar nominee in 1996) of the famous Macedonian director Milčo Mančevski were filmed.
The monastery church St. Ilija is small by its size, a single-nave construction, with an altar apse from the east, three-sided from the outside. From the north, the church is connected with a rock that gives it an unusual appearance and special character.
The interior of the church is painted with fresco-painting, two layers of which can be traced. The first, older layer, according to the presumptions of the scientists, originates from the 14th century, the time of building of the church.
