Church Saint Gjorgji, village of Banjani, Skopje region
| The church dedicated to Saint Gjorgji is small, one nave basilica located in the bottom of Skopska Crna Gora mountain. From its inscription, placed above the entrance door we learn that the process of construction of this church lasted three years, so that in 1548/49 finally all the works regarding its building and painting were completed. | |
It is built of nicely manufactured stone with rows of bricks inserted between the stones, that makes the façade more vivid. From the outside, on its eastern part, three-side apse is outspread.
There are two registered layers of fresco-decorations. The first one dates from the time of construction and characterizes with indisputably high artistic qualities. The frescoes from that period are distributed into three zones. In the base there are presentations of saints in natural size, than others by the waistline, placed in medallions and in the upper part there are scenes of the life of Christ and of the Saint to whom the church is dedicated. The second layer of the fresco-decoration is most probably from the end of the 19th century. On the western side of the church at that time a porch was built decorated with frescoes of saints in natural size.
In the church St.Gjorgji there are frescoes and icons, situated on the wooden iconostasis that are made by the affirmed author-Dimitrija Andonov Papradiski. The whole treasure that this small church offers to every visitor and believer deserves special attention and affection.
