St. DIMITRIUS, VAROS, PRILEP
| Archaeologists do not have accurate information on the exact time of construction of St. Dimitrius’s Church, neither of the people who raised it in Varos. In one of Emperor Dusan’s declarations from the 14th Century the existence of the church is mentioned as belonging to the Monastery of Treskavec, situated in the vicinity of Prilep. | |
Today the church represents a fusion of several buildings that originate from different time periods and styles. It has the form of a cross with a dome set up on a twelve-side tambour. It is remarkable for the ceramic decorations on the external walls and the apse that gives it a rich and beautiful look from outside.
Inside, the church was painted in the 15th - 16th Century when also the Emperors' Doorway was made in woodcarving. This is the only part of furniture preserved to this date.
