This town is often compared to the bird phoenix: throughout its history it suffered numerous devastations from the forces of nature and from humans. Still. each of the historic epochs left its heritage in Skopje and its vicinity, so that it is today an interesting mixture of European and oriental culture, with an abundance of antique and Neolithic traces in the vicinity.

Somewhere in the Skopje region, the mythical town of Justiniana Prima is hiding; it will certainly reveal even more testimonies about the times that passed. On the slopes of the mountains surrounding Skopje, numerous churches and monasteries that managed to survive the Ottoman destruction of Christian sacred objects, are still active. Among them, most famous is the Church of St. Panteleimon in the village of Nerezi, on the slopes of Vodno. The frescoes in it are a magnificent example of proto-renaissance.

And on the other hand, the town lives its life of a modern metropolis, and the numerous cultural institutions and events contribute to the lively rhythm of Skopje.
