KOSTOPERSKI RID, MLADO NAGORICHANE, KUMANOVO REGION

On the left side of the road from Kumanovo leading to Kriva Palanka, 9 km away from the town Kumanovo, over the church St. Petka in the village of Staro Nagorichane, rises a basalt rock hill, which dominates in the area with its height and outlandish (peculiar) appearance. A multi-layer settlement having an extending existence over time and cultures has been discovered on the hill. This is the archeological site of Kostoperska Karpa – Zhegligovski Kamen.

The numerous movable material that has been discovered gives proof of the life in this area. The oldest traces and findings date from the Eneolithic, but also there are objects dating from the Iron Age II. The ceramic fragments, made according to the Hellenic models, date from the 4th – 3th century B.C. and the majority of the findings date from the late antique, i.e. 4th – 6th century of the new era.

On the other hand, the researches have also discovered a structure, supposedly a Basilica, traces of a rampart and 7 medieval graves. The last findings date from the era of the Turkish ruling and this marks the end of the cultural history and chronology of this area.

The discovery of the underground structure (5th – 6th century) located at the south of the hill bears a special importance in the exploration of this archeological site. The structure comprised one main room that had protrusions resembling benches, and also two tanks, corridors, and vertical ventiducts. Numerous ceramic materials (fragments) have been discovered in the structure.
