JAHJA – PASHA MOSQUE

The mosque in honor of Jahja Pasha, the person who was proclaimed a vizier due to his military valor by Sultan Bajazit II, was raised in 1504 in Skopje.

The construction technique and the materials used speak of reconstruction and upgrading done probably after the damage that this mosque suffered during centuries. It had been struck by lightning twice, and during World War I, it was used as a German weapons and ammunition production facility. After the war, the mosque finally restored its vitality and has been used as a place for religious services.

Above its square shaped interior, a high, rib divided calotte raises. The beautifully decorated marble plates with which the walls of this Islam temple are covered, impress with their posture and symmetrical hanging ornaments, while the massive door made of carved wood gives the space special warmness. The minaret of this mosque is about fifty meters high thus making it the highest mosque in Skopje. Its top is decorated with gold symbols of the Muslim religion, the star and the crescent.

There are a few tombs and one burial chamber in the courtyard around the mosque. It is presumed that the son of the mosque founder, Mahmed Pasha, was buried there, too.
