Golem Grad
| At the junction of the borders between Macedonia, Greece and Albania, surrounded by the still and clear waters of the Lake Prespa, impressive in its solitude and mystery, we find the only Macedonian island - the island of Golem grad. | |
Two kilometers of watery route from the village of Konjsko lead to this natural fortress elevated some 30 meters above the waters of the lake with a surface of 18 hectares, abandoned by people nowadays, but a home and a real treasure of endemic plants, rare birds, different communities of animals, but also of objects, records and findings, who speak of the long centuries and long gone times when people spent their lives here.
Not only for the admirers and explorers of nature, the island of Golem grad is one of the most attractive places also for those whose interests are directed towards discovering the remains of the settlements of Neolithic, Hellenic and Roman times, the necropolis of the Roman and medieval period, as well as the six discovered churches, out of the former twelve, according to what the people recount. Actually, there was continuous life on the island in the period of some twenty centuries and a monastery life between the 10th and 14th centuries. Among the discovered churches, the one erected and fresco-painted in the 14th century on the foundations of a Roman water tank is extremely interesting.
Apart from the preserved church of St. Peter, the attention is drawn by the medieval church dedicated to St. Demetrius, as well as the early Christian basilica from the end of the 4th and the beginning of the V century, where remnants of a floor mosaic have been found.
