Vardarski Rid

he folk tales state that the reason for this name lies in an event from the past. In ancient times, a dervish arrived to the town and, since he liked it very much, he wished to stay there long. But the inhabitants reacted to his desire and decided to persecute him. Thinking about the possible consequences from that act, they decided to do it wisely, so upon his departure they greeted him with the words of hospitality "gel gerik" - "come again". After this event, the town was named Gevgelija.

Gevgelija is known to the cultural public thanks to the archaeological locality Vardarski Rid (Vardar Hill), located in its vicinity, that is an exceptionally interesting settlement with numerous historic layers, that hide the secrets and the answers about many events and happenings in the past of this area.
