The city of Delčevo is situated in the eastern part of the Republic of Macedonia, in the area Pijanec, at only 10 kilometers from the border crossing Arnautski Grob between Macedonia and Bulgaria. |

At the location of the today's Berovo, an old settlement previously existed, and its name remains unknown. Another settlement located 3 kilometers to the southeast from today's Berovo was known as Vasilevo (Vasilihorion), named in honor of the Byzantine emperor Vasilij (Basil). In the year 1950, the city was named after the great Macedonian revolutionary Goce Delčev (organizer of the Ilinden uprising in 1903, although he was killed before the uprising was started; famous is his sentence "I understand the world as a field for cultural competition among the peoples."). In the town, on St. Elijah's Day (Ilinden, 2 August), each year the festival Gocevi denovi (Days of Goce) takes place. M. Cvetanovska |
