Looking back to the distant history of the town of Debar, the researchers have determined that e prehistoric settlement existed there. But the first document where it is specifically mentioned under the name of Deborus, is the map of Ptolemy, from the middle of the 2nd century. The later documents about its existence originate from the times of Basil II, in the charter where he is noted as a settlement within the Bitola Archbishopric, and the itinerary notes of Felix Petancic from the year 1502, noted under the name of Dibri, and in the 19th century more detailed information can be found on its structure, arrangement and functioning as a city.

The Debar region is one of the most attractive and most researched areas by the etnologists and art historians. The reason for this are the famous villages Galičnik, Tresonče,  Lazaropole, Gari and others, villages where the rich folklore has managed to maintain its original beauty and its richness of forms, symbolic and ritual expression and depiction of the life and the world, to be preserved as a true ethnological pearl. The wonderful Debar regions are a cradle of a number of the workers of the Macedonian national revival (prerodbenici), authors and builders, as well as of the famous Miyak wood-carving school whose works are among the peak achievements of artistic mastery in that field. And, as an especially precious symbol of this region is the well-known monastery St. Jovan Bigorski, a spiritual, religious and cultural center, that with its astounding mystique deepens and accentuates the unique beauty of this part of Macedonian land.
