TZAR'S TOWERS
| The Tzar's towers, erected on a hill of about 180 meters, southwest of Strumica, are considered a part of the medieval cultural heritage. Like the other medieval town-fortresses, this one is also located on one of the most important antique cross-roads. The oldest findings (coins) speak of life in this area since Hellenic times. The oval space of the citadel with an extended north point, surrounds the hard limestone wall, erected in the late antiquity. | |

Tzar's towers, medieval fortress |
The acropolis itself is separated by an internal wall. On its west side, there are the entrance gate and the two towers, which according to the manner of construction, belong to the VI century, but were renovated in the period between 12th and 14th centuries, most probably during the reign of Tzar Tiberius, which is also the source of the new, Byzantine name of the town - Tiberiopolis. During this period, in the middle of this space a doždon was built - a tower of a hexagonal base with protruding sharp points. Today, there are visible remains of the profane building, some petty findings and building ceramics. In the archaeological excavations in this area, copper Byzantine coins dating from the 12th and 13th have been found.
The area under the town, in the northern part of the hill, located on a high terrace, where the oldest part of today's Strumica is situated (the market place), is surrounded by high ramparts. Out of the partitioned space, there was a necropolis in which Greek and Roman graves have been found. In the vicinity of this place, on the ruins of an early Christian basilica from the 9th century, the church of the 15 Holy Martyrs was built.
