Bezisten (covered bazaar)-Bitola
|
According to the preserved descriptions of the town in the period of the 16th century, many public buildings are mentioned, typical for the Turkish construction. Among them is the Bezisten with its 86 shops where the trade of different kinds of textile and silk took place. The inner organization of the architecture and the solid material of which the Bezisten was built were sufficient guarantee against the frequent thefts and robberies that were ordinary phenomenon in the periphery parts of the Turkish Empire. |

In the later years the Bezisten experienced minor transformations, but still the original look of this building remained unchanged.
Until the World War II the Bezisten was used as covered carsija where haberdashery goods and fabrics were sold. After the World War II the southern façade is pulled down and on its place new shops were build, which severely damaged the formerly well known architectural complex.
In the recent years many of the shops sell housing consumables and several restaurants were open.
The roof of the Bezisten was on three arches and was leaned on massive tick walls. The entrances were through four big arched doors, which were being closed with iron kepenci (window shutters).
