4 days-B: Kavadarci, Demir Kapija, Dojran, Strumica / Berovo, Vinica, Lesnovo, Kratovo / Kriva Palanka, Kumanovo, Skopje / Stobi, Veles, Štip

 

Day 1: Kavadarci, Demir Kapija, Dojran, Strumica:

In Kavadarci visit Vataša - the Memorial house of Strašo Pindzur and the church Uspenie na Presveta Bogorodica (Dormition of the Virgin), with the traditional architecture and houses made of clay (in some of them, wine is used instead of water to make the clay). Near Vataša are the Mokliški monastery and the Monument of the children killed in WWII. At 12:30 ili 13:30 (if you choose to have a lunch here) leave Kavadarci and start towards Demir Kapija. Stop in this beautiful gorge for 15 minutes and then, at about 14:30 you will arrive at the  village of Marvinci and you will see the locality Isar. You can spend half an hour there, and then start for Dojran - you will get there after half an hour's drive.

In Dojran stroll by the lake, see the famous fishermen's conntages - mandra, and you can rest in one of the cafés by the lake. You can see the remains of the devastated church St. Ilija.

At 16:00 start for Strumica, where you will arrive at 17:00 hours. In this town, visit the Complex of churches of 15 Martyrs of Tiberiopolis, and then the monasteries in the villages of Vodoca and Veljusa. Your can dine and spend the night in the city or, alternatively, in the Bansko Spa, where you can also see the remains of the old Roman and Turkish baths.

Day 2: Berovo, Vinica, Lesnovo, Kratovo:

Start from Strumica (or the Bansko Spa)  at 8:00 hours and you will arrive to Berovo at 9:30. Stay there until 12:00, visit the monastery Holy Archangel Mihail, the craftsmen shops, as well as the Berovo Lake and the pine-tree forest. You can enjoy a pleasant rest in one of the cafés by the lake shore, or in the lodgings of the Berovo monastery (you can have a lunch there, as well).

After an hours' drive you will be in Vinica, where you can have lunch and visit the Vinica fortress, famous for its terracotta icons. At 14:30 leave Vinica and head for the Lesnovo monastery, where you will arrive at 15:30. Here you can spend an hour, and then, after half an hour's drive arrive to Kratovo. The sights there are medieval towers and bridges and the church St. Jovan Opsecen. You can have your dinner and spend the night here.

Day 3: St. Joakim Osogovski (Kriva Palanka), Kumanovo, Skopje:

If you start from Kratovo at 9:00 hours, at 10:00 you will arrive at the monastery St. Joakim Osogovski.

At 11:00 start towards the village of Psaca where you will arrive at 11:30. Spend twenty minutes in the church St. Nikola, and then head for the village of Staro Nagoricane, near Kumanovo, where you can see the church St. Gjorgji. At about 15 minutes drive from this here is the village of Mlado Nagoricane, and its churches St. Petka, St. Gjorgji Pobedonosec and the archaeological site Kostoperski rid. Stay in the village for half an hour and start for Kumanovo. You can have your lunch there and about 14:30 you can start for Skopje, where you will arrive after about half an hour's drive.

In Skopje, visit the monastery St. Panteleimon in the village of Nerezi where you can have your lunch if you did not complete that Epicurean task in Kumanovo. After the visit to this monastery, return to the city of Skopje and go to the Fortress (Kale), walk through the old bazaar, see the church St. Spas, Mustafa PAsha mosque and the other monuments concentrated within the Bazaar. You can select the venue for your dinner from Stone Bridge and enjoy one of the restaurants there.

Day 4: Stobi, Veles, Štip:

If you leave Skopje at 9:00, you will be in Stobi at 10:00 hours. Do not forget to stop by the monasteries of Sv. Bogorodica (Holy Mother of God) and St. Jovan Krstitel (St. John the Baptist) by the river Pcinja, where the travelers stop to drink water, make a wish, and donate some money for good luck and a safe trip. In Stobi, assisted by tourist guides, spend half an hour sightseeing the exquisite complex of this antique archaeological site, recently adapted for visitors with the funds from the EU Phare CDP.

Then start for Veles. Here you can visit the church St. Panteleimon, walk through the old Veles quarters and get acquainted with the traditional architecture, see the monastery St. Dimitrija and the small churches in its vicinity and enjoy your lunch.

At 15:00 hours leave Veles and at 15:40 you will be at Štip. In this town, do not miss the chnce to climb the Isar fortress at the hill, and to see the medieval churches at the foothills. Also, see the gallery of icons in the church St. Nikola in the center of the city, and on the road to the village of Novo Selo enter the church of Sv. Bogorodica (Holy Mother of God). Enjoy the dinner in the city - we recommend the Štip specialty pastrmajlija (Macedonian pizza, as the foreigners describe it).
