The church of St. Peter, Golem grad
Among the discovered remains and foundations of numerous profane and sacral constructions on the island of Golem grad the only preserved church is the one dedicated to St. Peter. According to the frescos representing the life of the Holy Mother of God and the Acathistus, some scientists suppose that originally it was dedicated to the mother of God.
| The church of St. Peter was erected and fresco painted in the 14th century, in 1360, during the reign of tzar Volkašin. It is a single-nave construction in the vicinity of which there is a small two-floor inn, a witness of the monastery life, which took place in this region. | |
The interior of the church is filled with fresco and a significant number of them is preserved. In the apse, there are "Holy Mother of God Širšaja nebesa", "Paying Reverence to the Amnos". In the naos, there are scenes from the life of the Holy mother.
The fresco on the south façade of the church, where the Acathistus of the Virgin is illustrated, is interesting. It is a composition with an extraordinary thematic significance, a fresco where for the first time the siege of Constantinople by the Persians and Avars in 626 is represented. This theme will later become one of the most often frescos in the churches of Moldavia.
Among the compositions, it is worth mentioning the one entitled "Escape to Egypt", which is rarely found in our medieval churches.
